Los Angeles events
October 17, 2009 Had three great OH! events in Los Angeles. The UCLA Japan Studies program hosted an open reading and discussion in conjunction with Professor Michael Marra's Japanese poetry seminar. The discussion was lively and provacative and lasted two and a half hours. It was different from most events because the students had read the book. Many had questions about Zack's motivations and how his journey created his ultimate emotional enlightenment. Very cool. At Pomona College, the Pacific Basin Institute hosted a lunch talk. Yummy food and interesting questions, particularly from professors of Japanese literature. The campus in Claremont was very beautiful and quiet. Apparently the students are very studious! The Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena hosted an evening event. The museum is in a two-story older building with a large courtyard turned into a garden with koi ponds. The auditorium was nearly full, more than forty people. I did a fancy-schmancy talk with projected Web pages. Had some friends and family in the audience, as well as fans from my previous novels. Lots of good laughs and discussion. Two questions particularly interesting were about Japanese concepts of beauty, and the universality of the idea of mono no aware. Maybe I'll try to recreate that discussion here. Thanks to all the people involved in setting up the events and the people who attended! © 2010 |
