J.D. Salinger
January 28, 2010

Of course I read Catcher in the Rye but not as assigned reading in some lit class, but on my own when I was in my 20s. It didn't have a huge impact on me, maybe because I was older, maybe because of the hype, maybe because I was into different kinds of books at the time.

But there's no doubting the impact of the novel on the literature of the last half of the last century. And this impact led to the extreme reclusiveness of Salinger. I never understood why fame would drive someone to avoid nearly all contact with the world. But I suppose if it attracts people like Mark David Chapman, then I can understand it. If it intrudes heavily into your daily life and privacy, then I can understand it. But I guess you would have to be in his shoes to fully understand what it means.

Whatever demons he was avoiding, I hope he was happy in his seclusion.

I read Catcher at least five times when I was a teen. Guess that's why I'm a bit of a crank!
